Under the 309th Software Maintenance Group, I worked alongside a team of engineers whose mission was high quality software sustainment for military avionics. During this time, I had the opportunity to be a part of two separate divisions, System Design and Test Engineering. As a System Design Engineer, I focused on defining all system level requirements and interfaces for software development. As a Test Engineer, I evaluated software inaccuracies through practical applications and test procedure development.
Key Achievements
Being invited back for my 3rd consecutive summer, I was assigned to the Product Engineering division where I was introduced to switchgear electronics and automation systems. I learned the characteristics associated with control systems, such as NEMA ratings, enclosure builds, and functionality. My main project required the configuration of two SEL-451’s (Protection, Automation, and Bay Control Systems) in order to simulate a switch being operated by a motor control. This configuration was done using SEL software, “AcSELerator,” and allowed for simulation pre-production testing.
Key Achievements
My 2nd summer at G&W Electric, I once again interned in the Current Limiting System Protection division. I was assigned with designing laboratory equipment that would speed up the production process. Using AutoCAD, I drafted three-dimensional models for parts such as isolation transformer holders and mandrel cases. I also developed a power supply regulator that limited the output of an AC power supply to a certain voltage range.
Key Achievements
Prior to starting college, I was given the opportunity to intern at G&W Electric, a global supplier of electrical power equipment. I was placed in the Current Limiting Systems Protection (CLiP) division, where I shadowed the department technician and learned the assembly process of each CLiP unit. This internship introduced me to three-phase power systems and current limitation components including isolation transformers, fuses, and sensory firing logics.
